âAwe, look at you. What a nice boyfriend.â Zoe cleared a spot on her desk in the harbormasterâs office, overlooking the marina and ocean beyond that.
âI figure if you wonât take time to eat, then Iâll bring the food to you.â Jack set a plate of crab cakes down in front of her with a tall, iced tea.
âHave I told you lately that I love you?â She sighed dreamily, and her mouth watered as she inhaled the delicious aroma, making her realize just how hungry she was.
Crab cakes were traditionally more of a mid-Atlantic staple, but Maineâs Peekytoe crabs worked just as well. Zoe loved crab meat, especially Peekytoe. The rock or sand crabâs name came from the handpicked toe meat and the pointed shape of the leg.
The Peekytoe was a small crab, maybe only five inches across, with a red or orange shell and white belly. She loved that the crabmeat was shell free and ready to eat because it was picked right after it was caught. Less work for her. And the Peekytoe crab was sweet, salty, delicate, and juicy. White meat with bits of pink and a firmness to it, but it was equally delicate and silky, just the way she liked it.
âI know what my girl likes, and I love you, too.â Jack laughed. âBut seriously, you work too hard.â He sat in the chair across from her while she ate.
âWell, thatâs the pot calling the kettle and all that.â She grunted and kept eating. âYou have like five jobs.â
âI know, I just worry about you.â
She paused and wiped her mouth. âIâm just trying to do my part to help Greyson out. My friends in the Coast Guard have seen an increase in activity on the water from other countries as well as our own. None of the boats have come through the marina, but you know how that is. That water is so deep along the coastline, they can pull right up next to shore to smuggle anything they want. Itâs so hard to police that, but weâre all doing our best.â
âI know you are. Iâll keep an eye out. Iâm taking a group of tourists on my charter boat tomorrow afternoon to see the leaves along the shore up north.â
âOh, great. I wish I could help out, but Iâm swamped here.â
âThatâs okay. My parents are in town for the festival, so theyâre going to tag along and help. Mom can make her chowder, and Dad can entertain the group while I drive the boat. The weather looks good, so the trip should be a go.â
âTell your parents I said hi and let me know if you see anything.â
âWill do.â He picked up the dishes. âGotta get back for the dinner crowd.â He leaned over and gave her a kiss then shot her a wink and walked out the door.
Her heart warmed over the thought that he was all hers. She couldnât help wondering when he would ask her to move in with him. They had been dating for six months.
